when performance first comes to mind, so does turbo's and supercharging. the most efficient way of making power.
here's a short interesting article to help better explain it.

if its a 350 small block you really only want to turbo it if its a 4 bolt main. you can always beef up the 2 bolt main to withstand it but i personally like my 4 bolts. the thing with chevy is they like using powdered metal rods on the older engines which dont stand up to the compression demands of a turbo charger. if your wanting to safly charge a engine i'd go w/ forged crank, rods and maybe even pistons. you dont have too, its just more of a garentee your pistons wont give out. even with this said, nothings perfect and everything has flaws so its not imposible to break it. you also want to drop your compression. a stock engine with regular stop compression (about 8:1 to 9:1 comression) will generally handle 6-8 psi anything after that you start breaking stuff. you can drop your compressions by means of dished pistons, or different heads.. even as far as getting a thicker head gasket, different connecting rods, or even a different crank. i usually recommend keeping it under 16 psi because thats about the point you start running out of fuel, then you need to either rejet your carb or get bigger injectors, and a bigger high volume fuel pump.
a forged kit will runn $800-2000$ and a turbo kit can run anywhere from $800-3000 or so. all depends what you get. i've always liked superchargers better because they dont turn as fast. and they give you instant power. you have to wait for a turbo to spool up. a supercharger can wind as high as 80,000 RPM, maybe even more. some of the high end turbochargers will wind as high as 200,000+ RPM. no, thats not a typo! Shocked
